I’ve brought you some real quality this week – the fantastically talented Linda Gillard. Many of you will have come across her already, and if you haven’t – watch out!
I first read about Linda last year in Writing Magazine, and I tore out the article and kept it in my self-publishing folder. Across the top I wrote ‘inspirational’. Linda’s story was about how her novel, House of Silence, had been rejected by every editor her agent sent it to – even her existing publisher. Because yes, Linda was already a published author with a loyal following, and still she suffered wholesale rejection.
But Linda believed in her book, and decided to self-publish on Kindle in 2011. All I can say is, thank goodness she did, because House of Silence is easily the best book I’ve read this year. It sold 10,000 copies in less than 4 months, proving the editors – who said the book would be difficult to market – joyfully wrong.
You all know I don’t do book reviews, but House of Silence is, to me, the perfect novel. I read it in a weekend and I know I will read it again and again. Funnily enough, I downloaded and read the novel before I realised it was by the same author I’d read about months ago, and one of my inspirations for self-publishing.
It’s all a bit depressing, really. Because if authors like Linda are being dropped, or driven away, by their publishers, what hope is there for the rest of us?
Anyway, back to more cheerful stuff! Find out more about Linda Gillard on her website and Amazon author page. Read House of Silence, and then come back and tell me what you thought. And don’t forget to leave her some great reviews!
PS – A word on reviews 🙂 If you’ve read Can’t Live Without and enjoyed it, please pop over to Amazon and leave one for CLW too. 5 star reviews really help rankings, and rankings help other people discover a book you liked. Thanks guys x
