For all those of you who sympathised with me last Wednesday during IWSG day, I thought I’d post my reading list for the MA. Of all these books, I’d read only two before the course started: The Stone Diaries & The Unbearable Lightness of Being. I love Carole Shields – I’ve read everything she wrote – so this is the only jewel in the list for me.

What do you guys think?

Patricia Highsmith, The Talented Mr Ripley (1955)
Vladimir Nabokov, Pnin (1957)
Anthony Burgess, Time for a Tiger (1956)
V.S. Naipaul, Miguel Street (1959)
Muriel Spark, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1961)
Russell Hoban, Riddley Walker (1980)
Milan Kundera, The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1984)
Carol Shields, The Stone Diaries (1993)
Beryl Bainbridge, Master Georgie (1998)
J.M. Coetzee, Disgrace (1999)

One thing strikes me, looking at this list as a whole: We’re reading them in sort-of date order, and they do get more contemporary towards the end. (This module is called ‘Contemporary Novels 1’, so maybe ‘Contemporary Novels 2’ is bang up to date.)

Has anyone else done/is anyone doing an MA in Creative Writing? How does your reading list compare?
